My coaching philosophy
My number one priority for my athletes, hands down, is their safety. My main rules for my athletes are for them to have fun, try their best, and respect wrestling; this includes the process, their team mates, coaches, selves, practice, opponents and more.
Goals are fine but having a process in place to achieve them is what really matters.
I am sure, as with everything in life, my philosophy will evolve over time. I understand that no one person controls a wrestling match; your wrestler, the other wrestler, and the referee all have an impact. The one thing that your wrestler can consistently control in a match is their effort. Therefore, I emphasize effort and technique over results. Do not get me wrong, I would love for all our wrestlers to go undefeated but that’s not realistic nor does it help their growth as a wrestler.
Our wrestlers do not get better by wrestling easy matches, they do not get better by being greatly outmatched either. We will try to balance this so that they have challenging matches most of the time, with the understanding that there is a time and place for an easier or harder match.
Building a successful, sustainable wrestling program is my goal, not medals and trophies. A successful youth wrestling program is not measured by the wins and losses of its athletes, but by the moral character and values of its athletes. A successful youth wrestling program operates like a family while striving to increase participation levels, retention rates and teach the values of good moral character and work ethic to its athletes. Along with this, I strive to teach age appropriate, high percentage techniques and skills.
Longevity in the sport will help us achieve a successful wrestling program, creating strong, moral character and values will help our wrestlers to achieve life success.
